Siv Johanne Seglem: Young Mothers

by heartbeat
«During the past year I have photographed young mothers - girls who had a baby before they turned 18. Many of the girls I met told me about feelings of being the spectacle of their local community. Or being the target of people's looks and gossip. About feeling pressure towards having an abortion. The choice to keep the child was though for many of these girls. Even though sexual moralism is less prevalent today, there are perhaps other factors that make early motherhood such a radical issue in Norway?
The average age of women giving birth for the first time is steadily increasing, and the importance of being perceived as successful is more demanding than ever.
Maybe contemporary demands for education, income and success represent a pressure on women that in some ways has replaced the previous generations' sexual moralism.»

Siv Johanne Seglem (born in 1978, in Bergen) is a staff photographer at the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, and is currently living and working in Oslo.
Siv has won several prizes in the Norwegian Picture of the Year, and her photos have been exhibited in different group shows. She has also received several grants to work on larger documentary projects, like «Young Mothers».

The Stranger Song

by Andrea Gjestvang

Like many Greenlanders, Hans (16) grew up in both Denmark and Greenland. He had been living in Denmark for several years, when he decided to go back to his hometown Tasiilaq on summer holiday. His return flight turned out to be overbooked, so Hans just stayed in Tasiilaq. That's two years ago now. Hans is living with his grandfather.

« When I'm here I miss my friends there, and when I'm there I miss the friends here.
There is no big difference between living in Denmark and Greenland. We do the same things. In Denmark it's warm, and here it's cold. That's the biggest difference.»

A moment of NYC.

By Marte Vike Arnesen
A week in New York. With my newly bought camera i wandered the streets and avenues in search of the spirit of the city.  The result is wide, and not at all what I expected.

Returning to Greenland

by Andrea Gjestvang

I have just returned after some weeks of travelling in Greenland. Again. This time I went to the east coast with the small remote village of Isortoq being the final goal. Living with a local hunter family, I tried to capture the intimacy and routines of village everyday life.

Two years ago I made my first expedition to Greenland, and started what has become a long-term project and everlasting love-story: Greenland - Disappearing Ice Age. About Greenlandic communities going through dramatic changes, due to climate change, self-independence and a modern way of living replacing old traditions.
